The Safe House facility was a former jail located in Naivasha, Kenya, East Africa. The original jail was built by the Colonial Government between 1939 and 1942 and was used to intern Mau Mau rebels during the Kenyan civil war.
Post-independence, the jail house was used until 1967 when all inmates were transferred to the Naivasha Maximum Security Prison.
Reports of child abuse began to flood in. Children were being locked in closets, dumped on the side of the road to die, and girls were being arranged to marry at abnormally low ages. This growing need of child protection was clear to see, but what was to be done about it?
The colonial jail house had no windows, no lighting, poor ventilation, clogged septic tanks, no water tanks, no kitchen, leaking roofs and black walls from years of neglect and cooking on charcoal stoves. Most of the renovation was completed by March 2004 for the centennial celebration of the Rotary Club of Naivasha.
Children that are admitted to the Safe House fit into one or more of the following categories:
• A child that has been abandoned or neglected and is in need of urgent care and protection
• Children rescued from child labor
• A child who has been sexually defiled, physically assaulted and does not have a safe place to stay while undergoing treatment and counseling
• A girl who is at risk of female genital mutilation
• A girl rescued from early marriage or is at risk of early marriage
The age limit for admission is 4-17 years for girls and 4-15 years for boys. However, there has been extreme cases where we have admitted children below the set age limit.
The children admitted are primarily referred by the Government, Children's Department, Police Department or the Court.
• enhance recovery from trauma through counseling, group discussions, informal learning(homeschooling) indoor and outdoor games.
